Exciting news – Worthing versus the World is featured on the front page of this week’s Worthing Herald, available 13th January from all good newsagents. It includes a brief interview with the Worthing versus the World team (me).
Go and buy it – it looks like this. Continue reading
This is the first place that has come up against Worthing that I’ve been to before. I worked in Japan for two years as an English teacher and have really fond memories of my students, my school and of meeting my wife but all that was before I lived in The Mighty Worthing. Can the land of the rising sun score more than the town with the Hare and Hounds? Let’s find out.
Looking in every nook and cranny for a better Worthing
Have you ever heard of TravBuddy? It’s a thing where you can find out how much of the world you have been to by ticking the boxes of all the countries you’ve ever set foot in. Of course, what it doesn’t measure is how long you were there, the places you went while you were there, the amount of fun you had etc so it’s a bit of a weird statistic. I’d prefer to think about the cool things I have experienced, rather than which countries I have briefly set foot in.
That said, when the opportunity came to pop over to Borneo for three days I thought “It’ll be another Worthing Versus the World I can write” so I jumped at the chance. If you love strong opinions on a country, it’s culture and people based on 72 hours of exposure (including sleep) then read on.
Is Borneo better than Worthing?
My search to find a place better to live than beautiful Worthing goes on.
Let’s start with a poem
Worthing I miss you,
Let me count the ways how,
As I compare thee,
To the place they call Laos.
If you were in any doubt as to how to pronounce the name of where we are, that should help. I’m not that bothered though. If you prefer to go with
Worthing I miss you,
The elderly chaos,
Can it be beaten,
By the place they call Laos?
then be my guest.
Your bard with inspiration in hand
We went to Vientiane and Luang Prabang in search of somewhere better to live than Worthing, but did we find it? Read on to find out… Continue reading
Just before leaving The Mighty Worthing I saw the superstar that is Rick Stein do a classic programme where he watched loads of local people make local dishes then he tried to copy them and they all said he’d done an awful job and it wasn’t very nice. It looked good to me though Rick, so with that in mind we headed to Vietnam for some good times.
Nicer than Harveys? Not exactly
We visited Chau Doc, Can Tho, Saigon (AKA Ho Chi Minh City), Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue and Hanoi, but were they as good as Worthing? There’s only one way to find out: it’s Worthing versus Vietnam! Continue reading
Cambodia is one of those places that only ever existed to me on the news. When the opportunity came to visit I thought I should do a bit of research. The first thing I learnt was that there had been reports of bricks being thrown at tourists so I stopped reading. “You don’t get that sort of thing in Worthing” I muttered as I cursed myself for Googling it (like the time I had an itchy eye and Google suggested I was about to suffer a never-ending facial spasm and I spent a fortnight waiting for it to kick in. It hasn’t – yet!).
Hey! Is that somewhere better than Worthing over there, or am I starting that never-ending facial spasm?
So anyway, how does Cambodia compare to Worthing, did we get hit by any bricks and have I got a shaky face? Read on to find out. Continue reading
When I think of Thailand I think of bustling cities, beautiful islands and amazing food. No Elvis museum unfortunately, but you can’t have it all.
We went to the south of Thailand for a fortnight to see if it’s as good as Worthing and the results are in…
